Berry Goes 1-2 in Hickory LM Twin 40s

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 24, 2020) – Connor Mosack drove his No. 88 Nic Tailor Underwear/IFS Chevrolet to a solid third-place finish in Saturday night’s CARS Late Model Stock Car Series feature at Franklin County Speedway (Callaway, Va.), and Josh Berry finished first and second, respectively, in twin 40-lap Late Model features at historic Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway the same evening.
Mosack, carrying JR Motorsports’ colors in the CARS LMSC event, had never been to Franklin County Speedway before Saturday, but it didn’t seem to matter much. A storm blew through in time to disrupt qualifying, which meant Mosack had less track time that he might have wanted. A few changes from team chief Bryan Shaffer to the setup produced an eighth-place qualifying run.
Starting from the outside of the fourth row, Mosack maintained position and moved forward as his car’s handling came in. The young driver was running as fast as leaders Jared Fryar and Mike Looney, and on a restart with 25 laps remaining, Mosack was fourth, immediately behind the top three. Mosack battled hard for third place and took over the position with five laps remaining, setting out after Fryar, the CARS LMSC point leader, and Looney. The lead duo, scrapping and banging all the while, were too far ahead for Mosack to catch, and he drove under the checkered in third place. The result matched his best career CARS LMSC finish, which came in March at Southern National in his first race for JRM.
Fryar won the race with Looney second and Mosack third, nearly a second better than fourth-place Bobby McCarty. Corey Heim rounded out the top five. Mosack entered the race third in series points, 12 behind Fryar and just three behind second-place Layne Riggs, who finished seventh.
Berry earned another NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series victory in the first of two 40-lap features at Hickory and followed it up with a runner-up effort in the nightcap. Driving the No. 88 All Things Automotive/iRacing Chevrolet, Berry started from the pole and led all 40 laps to win the first event, then started eighth on the field inversion in the second.
In the second 40-lapper, Berry started to climb the order from the drop of the green, getting to fourth in the first 15 laps or so. Contact with another car cut down the right front tire, but the caution waved and Berry was able to get to pit road and change the tire. That put him at the rear of the field for the restart. Berry, who has won nine times this season at HMS, charged through the field and got to the bumper of eventual winner Ryan Millington, finishing the second 40 a couple of car lengths behind him.
Coming up this weekend, Mosack will travel to Langley (Va.) Speedway for the 125-lap CARS Late Model Stock event on Saturday, while Berry will run the Twin 40s at Hickory the same night. On Sunday, Berry will visit Southern National Motorsports Park (Kenly, N.C.) for a twinbill in the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series.

“Our Nic Tailor Underwear/IFS Chevrolet was a little free off of Turn 2 most of the race, which hurt us when trying to complete passes quickly. Otherwise, I think we were about where we needed to be and were one of the fastest cars. We needed to have passed for third much earlier after the last restart and then we might have had a good look at battling for the lead when they started getting together in the closing laps.”
